THE MUSIC WORKS
Music is the heartbeat of any people. In Ukraine, that is true x1000. It has been an honor to work with and record the most amazing musicians on the planet right here in Ukraine.
I’ve recorded so many acts, events, styles and moments that we’re going to wrap it for you to see. One Note At A Time: The Voices of Ukrainian Music in Time Of War is a project I hope you will support.
A working project for the past couple of years emerged by accident. As I made sure to never miss a chance to learn about the people, the culture, the diversity, I was exposed to not just the music, but deeper stories behind each of them. During the war, they each had a huge story you didn’t see until you got to know them and, well, …
This is the “One Note At A Time” documentary in progress.
On February 1, 2022, Svitlana and Olha Verbeshchuk were the opening sounds of my musical experience in Ukraine. The sisters played below the Maidan in the heart of Kyiv.
The next day, I met a duo playing on Yaroslava Val in town. The violin and guitar combo was groovy with a mixture of classical, jazz, folk and I was hooked. Pavlo and Stas were a block away a few days later when I threw two cameras down to capture more of what they were doing in front of the epic Zoloti Vorota, or Golden Gate.
The last musician I heard a day or so before departing Ukraine on February 23, 2022 was a lone accordion player in Ternopil. I keep that clip on my phone as I landed in America and gathered up the needed items to return. That melody stayed with me as did the connection of my friends who were now hiding in shelters, fleeing their homes and watching as terror arrived.
These were the first impressions. The War had not yet begun. The battlespace was being prepared by the largest powers but on the ground, life had a way of trying to find normality before the hell on earth began in Ukraine.
